Recognizing the existence of critical challenges in our schools, our environment and our economy, the founders of Green Earth Schools Foundation envisioned schools that will address those challenges strategically by encouraging students to convert course knowledge into entrepreneurial solutions. Our future lies in releasing student knowledge through social networking technologies to create social or community capital. Our current system has no systemic way of doing that. We believe that the purpose of education is not simply to educate the individual but to use a student's knowledge as a means for her/him to become active citizens who can improve the economic and cultural well being of a community. The primary goal of creating 4.0 GPAs that get students into premiere colleges is a poor strategy for meeting the challenges of our time. It ignores the larger opportunity of converting high schools into community R&D centers, of helping students to translate course knowledge (usually confined to tests) into solutions to community, state, regional, national or global problems.
