Ending the Language Barrier

Language continues to be a barrier to creating a truly flat world. However, there are several people saying now that a combination of social networking, automated translation technology and the wisdom of crowds could actually create the mass to reach a tipping point,where any content that people find interesting will naturally and quickly get translated.
The language barrier will not be broken by a single dramatic advance, but by many simple processes that, when combined with emerging technology and the continued growth of the internet, will enable ideas to jump easily across cultures.
Low cost publishing, broadband Internet and the emergence of large social networks with millions of users have combined to create the foundation for a global “human computing grid” that can be directed towards various tasks. Translating texts is one place that this could be applied. Thus, the information and the knowledge that matters to the online population will naturally become multilingual at an increasingly faster pace.
