Description

I wrote “in spite itself” because Anil Dash’ critique, based on which he predicted the failure of the Wave, is worth paying attention to, at least on 3 points:

a. “It’s too complex”

b. “There has to be value before everybody has upgraded”

c. “You have to be able to understand and explain it”

The attached essay grew out from a critique of Wave's critique by Anil Dash, then went to cover topics as diverse as "Flow and Chaos - two scenarios of the near future," "Attention elasticity and the Wave," "We are the message," Doug Engelbart' proto-hypertext Augment system, Lars Rasmussen's Wave video, Stowe Boyd's vision of the “Web of Flow,” and Mitch Kapor on Second Life and the opportunity to participate in the creation of a new world.

As I will keep tracking the evolution of the Wave and the new practices that it will enable, I will revisit and refine this picture. To make it more accurate and capture the future as it is emerging from our practice, please comment below.

 some interesting points within the essay on the augmentation of collective intelligence and attention with systems such as wave. In my mind this augment is not just due to aggregation of interfaces, but the ability to switch communication modes effortlessly as appropriate and in fact to overlay multiple communication modes. The small difference that makes all the difference is the real time, ultra low latency update of remote users actions - this removes cognitive friction and will make many collaborative applications usable.

 Thanks for contributing this reflection on the Anil Dash critique which, like you, I take with a big grain of salt. The complexity complaint is specious at best. Sure, if you look at the whole thing, it is complex. But that's like saying Microsoft Vista is complex. It may be complex to an device driver writer but not to the average user. The same is true for wave. You don't have to understand the federated protocol or the robot API in order to type in a blip.
 
 Thanks, also, for the insight on the value of wave and for describing its effect in terms of attention. I believe that, like any disruptive innovation technology, the full impact of Wave will be hard to comprehend or appreciate by the status quo; however, once a tipping point has been reached (or if the tipping point gets reached), then Internet civilization will begin to see the wave's power of redistributing content in a more collaboratively friendly format as possibility rather than threat.
