Weddings. They are beautiful occasions that bring families together to celebrate and dance and offer joyful toasts to love.

And they cost a fortune.

It’s no wonder that we seem to be having fewer of them. New government data out this week show that the marriage rate is declining. The percent of people age 15 and over who have never been married rose to 31.2% in 2008, from 28.1% in 2005, according to the Census Bureau’s big annual American Community Survey. Much of the media coverage of the results blamed the economy for this and other shifts in our national habits (carpooling rose, too).
