Skin cells changed into retina tissue - JSOnline
Description
Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have reprogrammed skin cells and turned them into different kinds of retinal cells, a remarkable demonstration that mimicked the early development of a key part of the human eye and raised hopes for treating disorders that rob millions of their vision.

The reprogramming of simple skin cells into something as complex and irreplaceable as the eye's retina is a miracle. Can vital organs be manufactured as well?

What's possible now is making individual retinal cells, not a functioning retina. Most organs have a variety of cell types, such as nerves, blood vessels, etc. I don't think making complete organs will happen very soon.

However, special cell types, made from a person's own skin cells, may be useful in repairing organs in which those cells have damage - such as retinas, hearts, etc. This is a more near-term objective. It can't be done with cells from another person due to the immune system reaction.
