Abstract. The use of participatory teaching methods in teaching and learning is becoming a common agenda in education as efforts of shifting from teaching and learning are being made. This study attempts to find out Tanzanian primary school teachers views on the use of participatory teaching methods. The study is qualitative and has adopted the phenomenographic approach. Ten primary school teachers from a school in Morogoro Municipality were involved in the study. Data for the study was collected through individual interviews and lesson observation. The study found out that there are variations and similarities in teachers views on what participatory teaching methods are, and the reasons for their use. The study also indicated that teachers face a number of challenges in using participatory teaching methods in teaching. The findings of this study can help teacher educators and other stakeholders in education develop strategies of supporting primary school teachers in the effective use of participatory teaching methods.
