ATLANTA - Health officials estimate that as many as 1 million Americans now have the new swine flu, although only 28,000 cases in the U.S. have been confirmed and reported to the Centers for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Lyn Finelli, a flu surveillance official with the CDC, voiced the estimate at a vaccine advisory meeting Thursday in Atlanta.
The estimate is based on mathematical modeling. Half of the world's confirmed cases are in the U.S. The U.S. count of 28,000 cases includes 3,065 hospitalizations and 127 deaths. The CDC reported the new count at the Atlanta meeting but has not yet updated it's Web site with the most recent numbers.
