Description
Common Tag is an open tagging format developed to make content more connected, discoverable and engaging. Unlike free-text tags, Common Tags are references to unique, well-defined concepts, complete with metadata and their own URLs. With Common Tag, site owners can more easily create topic hubs, cross-promote their content, and enrich their pages with free data, images and widgets.

The press release goes a little more into detail why the Common Tag is helpful:
      Link: http://www.prweb.com/releases/CommonTag/2009/prweb2522914.htm

"People have long used tags to organize, share and discover content on the Web. However, in the absence of a common tagging format for Web content, the benefits of tagging have been limited. Individual things like New York City are often represented by multiple tags (e.g., "nyc", "new_york_city", and "newyork"), making it difficult to organize related content; and it isn't always clear what a particular tag represents - does the tag "jaguar" represent the animal, the car company, or the operating system? There is more in the release, but this is the main idea.

Some thoughts: What I think is interesting is that this concept does not need a "critical mass" to be successful. Companies or organisations adopting the common tag can create an advantage by making their items tagged more consistently. Should the Common Tag not catch on it would even be possible to exchange tags/ontologies that have been tagged with this system with another - a future commong tag for NYC.
