Description

Ontologies

myExperiment is a collaborative environment where scientists can safely publish their workflows and experiment plans, share them with groups and find those of others. (Please see the myExperiment Wiki for more detailed information). This results in the myExperiment data model having three main features:

Content Management

Social Networking

Object Annotation

These features are the main focus of the myExperiment ontology.

The original myExperiment ontology has a single ontology file, ( http://rdf.myexperiment.org/ontology# ). This borrowed terms from Dublin Core , FOAF , SIOC and Creative Commons and SNARM (an in-house ontology for Simple Network Access Rights Management). A further RDF data file ( http://rdf.myexperiment.org/data# ) was written to represent objects that were specific to the myExperiment server instance at http://www.myexperiment.org .

The myExperiment ontology attempted to abstract the data model to make it easier to extend to manage different types of content and perform different types of annotation upon objects. The ontology gradually became quite bloated, making it less suitable for reuse so it was decided that it should be modularized. This would also allow SNARM and the additional RDF data file to be included as modules of the myExperiment ontology set. In total the ontology set contains 10 separate modules:

SNARM Simple Network Access Rights Management allows Policies for who can do what with a certain objects to be defined.

Base This provides the base elements required by myExperiment for content management, social networking and object annotation.

Attributions & Creditations This allows contributions to give attribution to earlier contributions and pay credit to users and groups involved in their creation.

Annotations This provides the different types of annotations used in myExperiment.

Packs This facilitates the use of packs to aggregate contributions and remote urls together. This module now borrows terms from OAI-ORE . ( More Information )
