-
It takes only eight simple patterns to imagine or express every instance of humour that has ever occurred, regardless of civilization, culture or personal taste.
The Eight Patterns of Humour expands on the basic pattern recognition theory as presented in the introductory volume by identifying the precise nature of the patterns involved and their relationships to one another. Divided into two main categories, their structures represent cognitive frameworks first for the apprehension and comparison of units and then for their application and manipulation. Here the concept of magnitude is introduced to accompany that of fidelity, refining the explanation of pattern strengths and weaknesses.
The relationships of units and contexts and the scanning process via which patterns are apprehended are also addressed for the first time. By comparing multiple units for their appropriateness to a certain context (as in fidelity) and then assessing the widest possible range of contexts within which a single unit can be repeated (in magnitude), the faculty of humour is seen to encourage the ability to recognise and assess the best possible tools for the widest possible range of jobs.
