Twitter is the latest trend- phenomenum on the net, every poor and not so poor soul has his mouth tweeted hundred times a day at Twitter and there is not slowdown in sight, but it’s still missing the most important thing for a new venture like to Twitter to stay afloat: profit.

The most common thing to do is to load the Twitter homepage with dozens of flashy and ultraflashy ads from all the advertising agencies , but this is not the smarter move, because while getting some few millions to pay the bills Twitter could put its millions of addict users on the edge, some will flock to Facebook or Plurk, but there is a few way where Twitter can leverage its short message method, here is how:

1. Want a Coke with that?

This is going to be a reference based advertising, where some words will be highligthed, so when you mouse over a short bubble will appear telling you what is next, you can click to see the definition of the word and click back to your last position. Twitter could sell ads based on unique words. This feature could be turn on and off if the user find it too obstructive.

2. The Bottom Line

Twitter could add a footnote to some of the most Twitted trend, if the most Twitted thing is about beaches … a 3 words ad could be placed under the block of information sent. This could be exchanged for a more explicit information about the discussed topic or could be a link to an advertising.

3. Connections

Twitter could create a connection based ad scheme where a single word can connect you with other words in the same category, this will put together: Hot and Coca Cola or Hunger ...
