Nice work by Pranav, I agree, though I think that the Sixth-Sense aspect would work better with something more personal, like a small eye-glass mounted HUD. This would remove the need for a projection surface, as well as improve the performance of the technology in bright areas, such as outside.

the trick would be to do this and retain the ability to coopt available surfaces for tactile response, such as done on the paper towels and on the hand for dialing in the interface, pushing air is not terribly satisfying, and typing in the air would require considerable fine motor muscle awareness and skills. this should be possible through object distance calculations and 'virtual projection' to them.

plus you lose any shared experiences - really the solution should ultimately contain both methods.

Certainly there is no restriction on using available surfaces for tactile response with an HMD - to the user the process could look exactly the same - though there might be problems with perspective transformations - the 6th Sense system (likely) accounts for shear caused by surfaces not being perfectly perpendicular to the projector by recognising the distortion in the projected image, whilst a HMD based system would need to artificially create the appropriate shear distortion to ensure that buttons etc appear to be on the surface.

I don't get the impression that the 6th sense system is intended for shared experience applications it really does seem quite personal, and I feel that in the presentation whenever a shared experience situation is shown in reality the user would probably rather not have everyone able to see what they are seeing. The 'meet an unknown person, project tag-cloud around them' scenario being the example that most sticks in my mind.

I LMAO at the person projection, and yes, that example would be an 'inside voice' feature, especially if it is projecting profanities about that person. one could also institute sharing through the HUD by syncing two personal systems on the system side, that actually would be better once the devices are as ubiquitous as (or simply are) cellphones.

The Shadowrun RPG has a concept like that. PAN (Personal Area Network) with AR (Augmented Reality) overlays on various HUD displays. Subscription to and sharing of selected 'overlays' between PANs. Starting from something as 'simple' as a shared map overlay, that can have an 'X' marked on it to show 'we are going 'there', but that has individual markers for 'I am here'.
