      I'm glad to see this issue raised. I don't agree with the specific action steps in the post because I've seen too many writes paralyzed by trying to overplan or believing that someone else's system was the "right" one rather than simply what one person found had worked for her. But the reminder that books can be created in small bites with a bit of tenacity is an important one. I once wrote a novel during a month of commutes--an hour on the train each way every day was plenty of time to complete a book.

      You're absolutely right. Of course, the only way I'm able to bulldoze through a novel is at the behest of National Novel Writing Month. That's the only writing I get done every year, but there is something about the competitive incentive that drives me to pump out 1700 words per day no matter what my work schedule is.

      A novel can be written in a month but it can take years to edit.
