Great post. Never owned one. Parents didn't want to spend the money. So I had to play with my friend's and cousin's.

I think ours was my brother's, but I remember playing it constantly. the baseball and basketball ones were ok, but football was by far the best. by the way, your 70s childhood twine is awesome, what I great idea.

Mattel Electronic Football....1979.....great, great, memories......2nd floor..West Akers Hall ...Mich St Univ., late night tournaments fueled by beer and other various party accoutrement of the day. Quite possibly, one of the most revolutionary games of the time. The battles were epic. What Mattel was able to accomplish with this game was that the successful player needed the statistical analysis required of a coach. You needed to calculate your odds. 4th and three was much riskier than a fourth and one.(exactly like real football) You also had to factor in time management and field goal percentages. At the time this game came out, it blew everyone away. Ahhh...nostalgia.....

Now a football video game needs a 100 level college class to teach you how to play it.

        the only downside: football thumb..

as to your latter point, every time a new madden version comes out I revel in the improved graphics and have renewed hope that I could learn and enjoy it. safe to say I'll never be on Madden Nation. but THERE IS HOPE, friends. madden 09 for the wii is supposed to support "nimrod mode" (eg, playable by impatient retro geezers such as myself). note that they probably don't actually call it nimrod mode.
