Anyone work with other platforms that wants to compare with Arduino? How about SunSpots, PIC-based systems, BASICStamp, JStik, TINI, and the dozens of others that are out there...?

I have done a little with PIC- specifically the PIC-Kit 1 which seems to have been superseded by the PIC32 Starter Kit (http://www.microchip.com/stellent/idcplg?IdcService=SS_GET_PAGE&nodeId=2615&dDocName=en532453). PICs are wonderfully cheap and the Starter Kits are not too expensive with nicely done tools and documentation. There are lots of very helpful application notes on Microchip.com that apply to any microcontroller.

Arduino seems to have a little more orientation toward the beginner in electronics and the community around it is definitely artier. Arduino runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac where I think the PIC tools are Windows only.

BASICStamp stuff is pretty spendy for a hobbyist.
