Optimistic thesis is that America has enabled "The Rise of the Rest" and is going to be less dominant in the areas of politics, economics and technology. Globalization and nationalism continue to spar. China is the new big. India is a democracy and US ally. The balance is multipolar. The lessons of history misrepresented by the West will be revealed. Author's style demonstrates ideas anecdotally. Of course, the past was full of surprises, e.g. admiral Zheng He's armada which was huge compared to Columbus, but dismantled by the empires at the time due to its cost, so the future is largely unknown. An an analogy of the paradoxes, “the world we’re entering will look like Bollywood. It will be thoroughly modern – and thus powerfully shaped by the West – but it will also retain elements of local culture.” (pp81-82)
