Green Cities Coalition

August Report #2

Here are the latest developments with the Green Cities Coalition and our eight working groups:

1. Web site: The Web site - www.greencoloradosprings.org - will soon have a “Green Map” feature to list and map nearly 150 green-friendly businesses and organizations. We have established a Website Working Group to move the site forward. To help out, contact Christi Harris.

2. Faith Community: There are a number of upcoming events that link spirituality and ecology. The most prominent is a two-night series in September with Richard Cizik of the National Association of Evangelicals (visit the Calendar link at our Web site). The Coalition-Building Working Group will explore how to reach out to the Faith Community at its next meeting, 7 p.m. Aug. 19 at Cece Jacobs’ residence. For more information, contact: Patrick Ayers.

3. County Parks: The El Paso County Park Advisory Board has approved (unanimously) a Sustainability Action Plan prepared by Allison Plute and Team Green, a group of Park Department employees. The plan includes collaborating with the Green Team from the city of , reducing electricity usage by 10 percent by the end of the year and maintaining recycling bins in parks.

4. Recycling Solutions: The Recycling Working Group will host a luncheon with the recycling directors from and , 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22 at the Olive Branch restaurant. This will be a great opportunity to see what other communities have done. Lunch in the banquet facility will run $15. To RSVP, contact Alicia Archibald.

5. More wind power: The Energy Working Group will meet with Colorado Springs Utilities staff about expanding wind power in the region. The meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20. To RSVP, contact Scott Harvey.

6. Green Kit for Kids: Richard Skorman (Poor Richard's) is planning to open a shop called The Conservation Store, which will stock gadgets and tools for energy and water conservation. If Richard could develop a Green Kit with 5-8 conservation devices, could it be a fundraiser for school kids (selling something good for the environment instead of candy bars)? If you have any experience in product packaging or school fund-raising, contact Steve.

7.  The Greenest: The Independent is accepting ballots for its annual "Best of Colorado Springs" edition. Some of the categories might be worth voting in, for example, Best Hiking Trail, Best Activist or Best Bicycle Shop. To exercise your franchise, visit www.csindy.com and click on the Vote Now button in the upper right. (By the way, you have to vote in at least 10 categories for the ballot to count!)
