Interesting, but not very Buddhist! I would prefer to say that Avalokitesvara can manifest as male or female, human or god, according to the needs of the worshipper.

I agree to a degree, however, Avalokitesvara is very central to buddhism as a bodhisattva, the article only goes to show exactly what you speak of and talks about both the great and small wheels of buddhism. Whether Kannon, Kuan Yin, Tara, and on and on,whether male, female it is only to share no one article can cover it all.
btw Al I've been curious what tradition of buddhism you practice, I always appreciate where someone is coming from more when I know, not out of condemnation, but in appreciation of the person and out of respect. Thanks for your inputs as always.

I'm Pure Land, Jodo Shinshu. You maybe noticed that I added a couple of Jodo Shinshu links to dharmabox.
We are taught also in Jodo Shinshu always to respect other forms of Buddhism and not to put down anyone else's dharma search. So I appreciate your gathering together the different viewpoints in this twine.
