Interest Networks are at a Tipping Point
Description

I’ve been writing about a new trend that I call “interest networking” for a while now. But I wanted to take the opportunity before the public launch of Twine on Tuesday to reflect on the state of this new category of applications, which I think is quickly reaching its tipping point. The concept is starting to catch on as people reach for more depth around their online interactions.

In fact – that’s the ultimate value proposition of interest networks – they move us beyond the super poke and towards something more meaningful. In the long-term view, interest networks are about building a global knowledge commons. But in the short term, the difference between social networks and interest networks is a lot like the difference between fast food and a home-cooked meal – interest networks are all about substance.

      Nova,

It's great. I fully agree to you that interest networks are the future. And I do wish Twine be better and better in this direction.

      Congratulation on going public!

Can't wait for the Launch on Tuesday. Woo-hoo! (although I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the "dog food" analogy...) Guess I should say Woof-Woof instead. Way to go Twine in any event!

      Congratulations Nova,
no doubt lots of interests are conjoining at present, it appears that we are sitting on top of a possible historical bifurcation of intelligence, will twine be a launching pad for a potential upgrade to human interaction on the grid? time will tell. be that as it may, our immediate future seems an interesting place to be part of..
      long live the interest..

Waiting for the launch tomorrow. Congratulations to the entire Twine team. Let the fun begin! Let the interests be met. Open the gates and let the adventure in. I want to express my thanks to the entire Twine team for this exhilarating beta beginning! I've met so many new people and made some great friends on Twine. It's still an emotional experience for me. It means too much to me express in words.

And, Twain, ... spero che il vostro viaggio in Italia sia meraviglioso e quello restituite appena possibile a cordicella!

CONGRATULATIONS, NOVA. There's no one in any American company that could have done what you have done with Twine, even Steve Jobs! And, that, my friend is saying much!

See you all on Twine after the launch!

High praise indeed, thanks Jack. I have many people to thank for where we are today -- especially the Twine team (they actually did all the *real* work), and our core circle of power users, who have contributed much of the content, set an example for newbies, and built a thriving community. And yes more features launch tomorrow AM. Stay tuned!

Don't worry Twain. Tomorrow there will be double the number of twines showing up in the interest feed, without scrolling. Also there will be a time-based view as well so you can see what's new.

Evidently, although for anyone who happens to be interested in Chinese but not a Chinese speaker perhaps you should point out it is actually normally written and read all "squashed together" otherwise they may get the wrong idea.

I have no idea whether that is harder for someone from mainland China or Taiwan etc. to read, but I found it slows me down though it is readable (breaking the words with spaces makes me read staccato) .

Now for me, I prefer writing pinyin using numbers to express tones (as a learner it helps with memory), but once someone got all heavy and pompous about that (it is a funny old world isn't it?).

I have to agree with the original sentiment and have been reading Yihong's blog for some time :).

On the topic of dog food, I can confirm that "eating your own dog food" is an extremely common phrase in the software industry. The idea is that just as you would be distrustful of somebody who manufactured dog food that they claimed was the most delicious, most nutritious, etc but who did not feed it to their own pet dogs, you should be distrustful of companies that create products that they themselves should find useful but that they fail to use (for no good reason that they can explain). For example, if Microsoft internally failed to use Outlook as their mail server, that would be an example of "not eating your own dog food".

The dolphin and other alternatives don't make as much sense in this regard, and even if they did, the phrase is ingrained. Saying it should be changed is like objecting to "the early bird gets the worm" because you don't like birds or you like worms or because it involves death and saying that it should be "the early person gets the just ripe apple" ;-)... Even if it made more sense, the phrase has become an idiom.

I have to say Calvin, not being part of the "Software Industry Insiders Club" and reading the phrase "dogs are eating the dog food" I was somewhat offended. I understand your iteration of the term, which if you compare the two, is still distinctly different. If I eat my own dog food, then sure, I'm consuming something I've made along with the group I am serving. The way it was actually applied in reference to users coming to Twine and remaining connected for considerably long periods, implies something totally different, as in some kind of Pavlovian response, and personally, I find being referred to as a "dog" in this sense, somewhat demeaning, as if "they're just dogs, we could feed them table scraps and garbage, and they'd still eat it up, because they're just dogs."

Simply because a phrase is 'common' within a closed group does not necessarily make it an acceptable term. I live in the South, where up until quite recently, one category of individuals living here would regularly employ a very common term in reference to another category of individuals, which fortunately, has fallen by the wayside in my lifetime for the most part. But in any case, that term, no matter how lovingly applied by the first set of individuals is still terribly demeaning and degrading when used in reference to the other. The point Twain was making, to which I agree, is that there are probably better ways to make reference to the user base, the consumers of your product, than to refer to them as "Dogs", no matter what the intended meaning.

I added an entry for the phrase on the "English Language" twine: http://www.twine.com/item/11l2tky6f-8z/eating-one-s-own-dog-food-wikipedia-the-free-encyclopedia

It seems the phrase originated in an Alpo dog food commercial and was popularized at Microsoft.

I didn't realize until reading this thread that the phrase is not very well known. Given that it is so uncommon though, I agree with you about issues of perception and the likelihood of misunderstanding. I know that I will certainly be extremely careful if I use the phrase again. And to be honest, I've only ever heard it used in the sense I outlined above, where the person who utters it is (usually) the one that is metaphorically the dog.
