I went to school right around the corner from where the Ramones started playing--they Kicked It With A Tastey Groove!!!

The Ramones were an American rock band often regarded as the first punk rock group.[1][2] Formed in Forest Hills, Queens, New York, in 1974,[2] all of the band members adopted stage names ending with "Ramone", though none of them were actually related. They performed 2,263 concerts, touring virtually nonstop for 22 years.[2] In 1996, after a tour with the Lollapalooza music festival, the band played their final show and then disbanded. A little more than eight years after the breakup, the band's three founding members—lead singer Joey Ramone, guitarist Johnny Ramone, and bassist Dee Dee Ramone—were dead.[3]

The Ramones were a major influence on the punk rock movement both in the United States and Great Britain, though they achieved only minor commercial success. Their only record with enough U.S. sales to be certified gold was the compilation album Ramones Mania.[4] Recognition of the band's importance built over the years, and they are now regularly represented in many assessments of all-time great rock music, such as the Rolling Stone lists of the 50 Greatest Artists of All Time[5] and 25 Greatest Live Albums of All Time,[6] VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock,[7] and Mojo's 100 Greatest Albums.[8] In 2002, the Ramones were voted the second greatest rock and roll band ever in Spin, trailing only The Beatles.[9] On March 18, 2002, the Ramones—including the three founders and drummers Marky and Tommy Ramone—were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.[2][10]

Fame, fortune and other 'rock star' things were never as important to the Ramones as they were to other bands that started from similar circumstances such as Kiss.

While Kiss has become a brand name with all the corporate associations, the actual members of that band are hardly as beloved as the Ramones are as individuals.

Kiss exists as a fantasy band, larger than life, but the Ramones were always part of us, perhaps more talented, more charismatic than you and I, but never aloof, never pretentious and consistently good.

The Ramones were an 'album' band rather than a 'hit single' band and while there are many top bands that have a similar methodology, the Ramones stand alone, far far alone in one catagory that I have yet to see another band come anywhere close at.

The Beatles spawned generations of bands that were 'Beatle-esque' and so did the Ramones. Somewhere between pop punk and hardcore punk is a genre of Ramones-influenced punk, many of my favorite bands fall into this category, chances are some of yours do too.

But, the Ramones have done something that no other band (in my experience) has done, they have inspired Ramones-esque bands to cover not only the occasional song, but entire albums!!

Think about it, just about every band has covered a song and many have contributed a version for a 'tribute' album or even scored a hit with a cover, but when an entire album is covered by a band that isn't drastically changing the songs then it is the ultimate expression of love and tribute.

These cover albums were not made as filler when the bands ran out of their own songs (pop punk bands are generally more inclined to be prolific rather than perfectionists), they almost assuredly weren't made to generate a big profit (considering royalties and the small production runs, they might have taken quite a while to even recoup their investment) but these cover albums appear to me to be more like a spiritual ritual where the bands are channeling the mystical power of the Ramones or perhaps just a way to join a brotherhood of 'true' fans.

Screeching Weasel recorded a complete copy of the Ramones debut album, they didn't try to re-interpret the songs just re-record them because of their great love.

The McRackins covered the Ramones entire Too Tough To Die album, they didn't even change the title! and another of my favorite bands, Jon Cougar Concentration Camp, covered that album too!

Another band I love, Boris the Sprinkler, covered the - "End of the Century" album.

There are many more listed here http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Backstage/2916/ramones/7trib-al.html

The Ramones, in many ways, are not just a band but an institution and an institution that has always valued the most important things in life, love, fun and integrity, all that and a sense of humor, it really doesn't get any better than the Ramones, the greatest band ever!
