The changing Faces of TWINE
Description

It must be the change of seasons. Maybe it's just spring cleaning. But it seems like we have had a flurry of activity recently around personal avatars from some of the more prodigious Twinarians.

Dr. Evil is a favorite of mine, as is Homer Simpson, and now pomlover has had a makeover from one to the other.

http://www.twine.com/user/pomlover

I Guess it all started with Jack D. Logan's new look as the Twine Mascot, which JDL immediately co opted into his own online presence.

http://www.twine.com/user/jackdlogan (this one's my fault).

John Rodriques is continually doodling new looks, like a kid trying to write with his opposite hand in crayon. http://www.twine.com/user/johnrod so I've gotten used to his schizophrenia.

And now EVERYONE's favorite female roboticist (after susan calvin, of course) has gotten in on the game with her new "window to the world". http://www.twine.com/user/aasemoon

Who's next?  Nova, leaving teletubby-land and jumping onto the next VirginAir rocket into space?  Twain shedding her stripes and becoming a leopard?  What is the world (or at least Twine) coming to?

________________

Personally, I understand the desire to freshen up every once in a while--new look, new face, new attitude, etc--but from the other end, it gets a little unnerving.

I am a visual person--pictures and images impress my mind much faster than words.  And within Twine, I've come to associate certain images (avatars) with the people I like to hear from, see what they're commenting on or posting, and maintain contact within the framework that this network has established.

Now I've got to make new mental connections that pomlover is no longer a slack-off beer drinking couch-sitting slouch in his underoos, he's become the essence of all things that Austin Powers finds evil, repelling, and somehow familiar at the same time.

Don't worry, I'm not complaining, but I do find it FASCINATING as a certain Vulcan scientist would say, that so many of our twine-friends have chosen a new look all at the same time.  Is this turning into Logan's Run and the NewYou shop?  aaagggghhhhhh......

But heyyyyy don't forget, it's not like your avatar didn't change! ;) There used to be only Agave spikes. Now there's a fancy coloured Gremlin standing right on the top of the Agave spikes... ummm... somehow! So you see? Change of season got you too! ;)

And I also what to know what kind of special treatment JDL gets, since his web page link above is the ONLY one with a page view on it. All the others still show (After a full day) just the generic Twine-Can't-Figure-This-One-Out-Yet original launch page image. Jack must have paid for preferential seating or something.

Hey, all you people in the balcony. I'm down here in "THE FRONT RROOWW!"

Now, I have a request. I want all of you avatar-loving closet cases to show your faces! I have a real need to look you folks in the twine eye to see what you're made of!!

Of all of the folks above, I notice that only Aasemoon and I have put ourselves 'out there' with a 'real' facial image! Let's begin a twine revolution to unveil the 'avatared ones' - let the sun shine brightly on the new imaging of the twine community. I call on all twinerians to unveil themselves before the world.

For God's sake, ... I'm living with being the twine mascot! And, ... I haven't heard from Nova yet about receiving his endorsement for becoming the Twine Chancellor of the Exchequer. And, ... I haven't gotten my T-shirt (large with long sleeves, please!) yet either!!!!

Out of the closet with all of the avatared ones!!!

      - Having a belly LOL!!

Recently I have never seen the point other than posting a picture of myself. I use the same one everywhere.

Of course there is a potential security issue but I have noticed that there are so many other middle-aged balding males that look vaguely like me that that is not an issue (obviously this club does not include people like Brad Pitt etc. ;)). I also tend slighty fudge other details such as Birthdays, exactly where I live etc.

I can understand the annoyance of being hit upon though, many people assume I learn Chinese because so many Western guys are attracted to Asian females. Actually I am happily married and even if I wasn't then personally my taste in that direction would probably have me learning a Scandanavian language if that was my motive. Having said that I often encounter Asian ladies online who are looking for western partners (you would think my pic would protect me) so even in language exchange they adopt a "girlie" approach and an unfeasibly pretty picture for their avatar (amusingly I have seen the same one used a number of times probably a pic of some actress or pop-star).

Chinese guys should be a good bet but if I see a picture of a young Chinese guy on a language exchange site then 9 times out of 10 he is overconfident and arrogant (that is not racial I guess just a guy thing, it is well known that women generally make much better language exchange partners), older Chinese guys are rare on these sites and often either are too afraid of losing face carry a grudge (because they assume that Western guys trying to learn Mandarin are often going to steal Chinese women).

So this leaves me scanning icons looking for pictures of plain looking older Chinese women (atypical behavior, I guess), of course I can't disclose this to my potential language exchange partner. I have had one or two very good exchange partners.

A ramble I know, but this business of pictures to represent you is very complex...

What if you're from Chicago and wear a black hat and sunglasses?

This is but one illustration of what happens when a user is deleted. This original bookmark note was placed on 8.15.08, and shared to several Twines. The link shared below shows 40 comments being added within Social Networks to this post. When you open it however, there are only 24 total comments. Several parent comments that were made by [a deleted user] are no longer present. An even greater number of child-comments that had been added by other users are now also gone. Many of the remaining comments are out of context now because the replies they were placed after no longer exist. The story makes little sense now. Unfortunate circumstances.
