Favorite Floyd album?

Get Feed

This has obviously been covered many times over in many forums for decades now, but, what the heck, why not try again.  What's your favorite floyd album?!!?

Tough call for me since I've celebrated their entire library for a long time.

Nevertheless, my vote: Animals.

Officially, it's "The Wall." But since I've played it (and Dark Side of the Moon) a million times throughout my life, I don't play it as much lately as others.

As far as which Floyd album I play the most nowada, lately it's been a tie between the Final Cut, Animals, and Meddle.

Even though the Final Cut is not a really popular album amongst Floyd Fans, I'm so drawn to it because of the two songs "The Final Cut" and "The Gunners Dream." "Comfortably Numb" is my favorite all-around song. And if "The Final Cut" is not my second favorite all-around song, it's pretty close. It's also the song I most frequently sing when I Karaoke (If you can image that. I usually get a lot of confused stares.)

I listen to Animals often because for a long time, I did not have a copy. I had the tape in college, but didn't buy the CD until recently.

I listen to Meddle primarily for "Echoes." I only saw the Pompei documentary lately and watching Floyd play "Echoes" gave me a new appreciation for the song.

And by the way, I do play "Amused to Death" alot. ("Pros and Cons of Hitchiking" and "Radio K.A.O.S" only a few times when I first got them years ago. Could really never get into either of them.) And Gilmour's "About Face" is one of my favorite albums as well. (Back in 1984 I probably played that album 3-4 times a day, for many many months.)

Interesting. Yeah, nonstop radio play over the years has killed a lot of The Wall for me. I'll often turn off or switch the station when something from The Wall or DSOTM comes on, to "preserve" what I still really like (if that makes any sense).

I confess to not knowing The Final Cut very well, though an ex-girlfriend was really into it and I do remember a few tracks sounding pretty good.

Meddle is a very, very close second for me (and that whole Pompei video is *awesome*). In fact I listen to Meddle more than I do Animals. Animals, though I listed it as my favorite (which I stand by :), is an album I can only listen to it at certain times, in the right mood, when I can listen to the whole thing.

Interesting you mention "About Face" - I've only listened to it a few times, but have the same experience with Gilmour's first (self-titled) solo album. To this day it's one of my favorites, and doubtlessly the most-played album - of any artist - of all time for me. Like you, I played it over and over and over in (and since) college (though lately not as much).

These days I'm not able to "properly enjoy" floyd as much as I did in the past. And, there are some tracks that seem really really weird to listen to when doing distinctly domestic activities, and as I said I'll often turn them off.

Only have seen them once in concert (TDB), but it was awesome - best sound quality I ever heard at an arena show. (I had no problems with TDB since I'm of the "Gilmour was floyd" variety, as opposed to the "Waters was floyd" variety, though in truth it wouldn't have been the same without any of the 4/5 along the way. TDB certainly is no floyd-of-the-70s but wasn't horrible either.)

To me Floyd was equal Gilmour and Waters. To me they are my artistic/philosophical/political/musical parents. Gilmour is the lyrical, sublime, appreciative of majestic beauty, laid-back one. And Waters the cranky, left-wing, emotional one. Or good cop/bad cop. They are just two sides to the same coin. Their sweetness and sourness mix together just right. And I probably wouldn't be as liberal or concerned about the justice as I am now if I had never discovered or listened to the albums Dark Side of the Moon thru Final Cut in college.

To me all the post-Waters Floyd albums are essentially in the same group as Gilmour's solo works (including Island) - beautiful stuff to listen to and moderately meaningful lyrics. But none of Gilmour's words compare to Water's biting commentary on life and society as in Animals, The Wall, Final Cut, and Amused to Death.

And then Piper at the Gates of Dawn just for Bike - the best song in the world to sing when you're drunk over and over and over again.
