It's said that language shapes thought, and in that regard reading should be a part of that. How do our reading habits impact the way we think?

I caught myself starting to skim this at paragraph three. The premise seems convincing to me but if there is a change, I wonder whether there is a more subtle 'tagging and filing' exercise going on which lies behind wandering attention. For instance, I'm still able to focus on work papers but I find that recreational reading does seem to be less focused - as I start to skim and move on if there isn't an immediate payoff or a roadmap of what will be covered so that I can skip on to what is of interest.

Then again, this may be exactly the thrust of the article I just skimmed.

I found myself skimming as well. But is that true for all my reading? I have definitely learned to selectively skim content from my online reading, which has carried over to print material, but when I'm reading good fiction or an article (online or in print) that I'm really interested in I tend to take my time. I guess I agree that I have adapted a new reading style shaped by the content I read online, but I don't think it's mutually exclusive to deep reading. To me it boils down to commitment: What is your invested interest in an article you find online?
