Sadly, this article is very outdated in just the 2 years that have passed since it was written. I would argue it was outdated within just a few months after.

A personal experience: I was in the market for a new computer in fall of '06. I ended up buying a MBP after weighing my options very heavily (it was my first Mac and many of the same things described in this article left a sour taste in my mouth--especially the attitudes and the concept of a closed system).

That said, that MBP was $1,000 less than a comparably equipped Dell at the time. That became the bottom line.

After getting used to the OS, I have to say I do like it quite a bit better. As a power user, I love the Unix underpinnings with the polish on top. That, and the software that is written for the platform is some of the very best in the world. The development community is incredible!

I would never lock myself into one platform for life. I expect when I'm in the market for my next computer, I will definitely weigh what the best choice at that time is. Anyone that purchases something (or votes) blindly based on brand name is asking for trouble. The rampant fanaticism and blind skepticism to anything "different" still leaves a sour taste in my mouth to this day...

Great article overall though, so thanks!
