very cool. make sure you leave the "http://" out of the twinefeedurl, though, or it will generate an error.

I managed to get it to work and posted it on the twine requested here:

It worked when I set it up. Unfortunately, it does not seem to be working now. The feed validator does not seem to validate the feed. When I use just the path described above and type into the browser it does not get into Twine.

          Any suggestions anybody?

I get this message when trying to validate the original feed in Feedburner:

            *

Server returned HTTP Error 401: Unauthorized

And the address turns up in the URL entry space without the initial name and password, even when I have entered them.

I deleted the whole thing and re-entered it. The initial feed turns up in netvibes, but it does not update at all.

I was able to add my home Twine feed into FeedBurner by providing a fully qualified url, eg:

              http://james:password@twine.com/feed/atom/entries/

FeedBurner is still "analyzing" the feed (taking off the bubble wrap and such) but it looks as though it was accepted and when looking at the exported xml it looked valid to me.

Thanks, James. I tried that too with my own home Twine feed and it is accepted at first by Feedburner and then it sends to Netvibes ok. However, when I check the validity under 'Troubleshootize' and 'Original Feed Validity' the same thing happens and I get the same error message - 401. It also does the same thing with the address - only 'http://twine.com/feed/atom/entries/' comes up, i.e. without the initial user name and password, which were included in the original feed address. The same thing happens with various other similar permutations I have tried. The initial feed seems to be accepted but fails to update as it is invalid.

Good news, James. Subsequent to my last post saying that Feedburner was still not validating the original feeds, it does, nevertheless, seem to be updating them. Both the 'interests' home Twine feed I added along the lines you suggested now, and my previous latest version of the 'all items' feed I had set up earlier now seem to be updating properly.

I won't count my chickens just yet. I shall wait till tomorrow and see that they continue to update, but it looks like they are now working. It seems that the 'validate feeds' troubleshooter in Feedburner is not very trustworthy.

Many thanks indeed for all your help. I shall give you full credit if/when I post this back on the 'tools that work with twine' twine.

excellent! tenacity usually wins in the end :)

don't worry about credit and such. we all learn in the process.

                  best,

That's the error you'll get when the the provided credentials are not valid or are non-existent.

Each feed client/service varies a bit on the level of support for authenticated feeds, ranging from it is supported intrinsicly, you can force authentication by providing the credentials in the url or not supported at all.

In order to validate a twine feed, I copy the content locally, using curl, eg:

            % curl -v -L http://user:password@twine.com/feed/atom/entries/foo

I then use a local install of Feed Validator (see http://feedvalidator.org) to validate the local twine feed copy.

This will at least help validate twin feed conformance. I am very keen on keeping on top of any feed conformance viloations, so when you run into them, do pass it our way.

does not work yet for me.
      i tried:

      http://groovehunter:xxx@www.twine.com/my-items-all#
      http://groovehunter:xxx@twine.com/my-items-all#
      http://groovehunter:xxx@twine.com/my-items-all

The URL you entered does not appear to be a valid feed. We encountered the following problem: Unknown feed format encountered (The root element is [Element: ])

I suspect you will want to enter the feed url, not the url of the page that contains a feed(s). I'm unsure about this, though, as some feed readers are able to detect feeds when given a page. If I'm correct, you will want to try the following:

        http://groovehunter:xxx@www.twine.com/feed/atom/entries/my-items-all

Jesse, Feedburner worked initially for me as well, with Netvibes, but it doesn't update. Did you get yours to update with Google Reader?

It is probably because these aggregators forget authenticating information after a while (but not all the time ... weird).

I've still have to try using feedburner for adding content to my netvibes so that I can find out whether my twine password is kept or not that way.

This was put up on Cool a few days ago by Bob Stewart but there seemed to be some problems with it. Nova asked people to put it up here if we got it working. After a lot of help from various people, principally James Todd, I managed to get it working properly. As James suggested, this is the address you put into Feedburner for your home 'all interests' feed.

      http://name:password@twine.com/feed/atom/entries/

I was then able to read it via Netvibes. The problem is that Feedburner does not seem to validate the feed so when you check the validation you will get a 401 error message. Nevertheless, it does seem to work.

      Good luck!

You can use Yahoo pipes to do a similar things, also Netvibes supports authenticated feeds out of the box.
