I have participated in testing Powerset during the last few months and I found a number of very intersting features.

They've made significant advances in the past months. Hot.

I want them to scale to the entire web. That's when it starts to become really interesting.

If I was sitting in management at Google or Microsoft I'd be screaming: Go go go! - we need to aquire them now!

This is the first that I've seen this tool, but I'm excited to begin using it. Hrafn, you noticed that "They've made significant advances in the past months." I wish I'd been following their progress.

Twain, on my first query in Powerset, I searched "David Ward-Steinman," a friend of mine, and found some interesting anomalies. Here are just two:

      1. In the outline I found, "number performs works," which makes no natural language sense; however, this refers to

"His orchestral works have been performed by a number of ensembles, including the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, New Orleans Philharmonic Orchestra, San Diego Symphony Orchestra, and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra."

      2. In the same outline, I found, "Ward-Steinman divided time" - this refers to the sentence,
"Ward-Steinman is currently dividing his time between San Diego State University and Indiana University in Bloomington."

Observation: "Ward-Steinman divided time," from a natural language point-of-view, sounds like he's a physicist working on the edge of String Theory, but, it, as evidenced by the related sentence, refers to the notion that he currently divides his time between two universities, which implies that he currently teaches at both universities.

However, these were the only two triples that made little sense without their contexts. All the others were apt or spot-on, which is very exciting to see.

SO, ... this is tough stuff. I've been developing semantic webs for more than 20 years, and we're finally beginning to see some real progress toward natural language processing by machines.

      Cool, ... very cool!

You have solved the "MYSTERIES OF THE UNIVERSE AND SEMWEB IN ONE!!!" Congrats!
But, again, progress IS being made! LOL!

      This one is kinda funny:

      Why is obama popular?

Google: An amazon debate about the topic "Why are other people popular when they tell you one thing and do another? I would rather Obama speak softly, and let his actions show, than for Hilary to ..."

Powerset: Error'd out "Connection Closed By Remote Server"

AskWiki: On October 2, 2002, the day Bush and Congress agreed on the joint resolution authorizing the Iraq War, Obama addressed the first high-profile Chicago anti-Iraq War rally in Federal Plaza, saying: I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a US occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences.

Just tried the "why is obama popular?" search on Powerset and got this for the first result:

"Barack Obama - Obama has not been implicated in any wrongdoing. ... Supporters and critics have likened Obama's popular image to a cultural Rorschach test, a neutral persona on whom people can project their personal histories and aspirations."

Now, I work at Powerset (on the front-end team... we did all the ui/design/interaction stuff, but nothing to do with the actual "results" besides presentation) so I'm somewhat biased, but that seems like a pretty good result to me :)

Sorry you got the error the time you tried though, we're still working through the kinks of launch and all.

      @Twain,

The reason Powerset and AskWiki screwed up that question is because the content isn't in Wikipedia (or at least I wasn't able to find it after a quick search). The closest article I found was http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth but no direct answer... just stats about the rotations.

I think as the knowledgebases grow for these sorts of applications they will inevitably get 'smarter'.

Here is one I found interesting...

"who is the president of the United States?"

      Powerset 1st Result:
"President of the United States The President of the United States of America is the head of state and head of government of the United States. ... The president is the chief executive of the United States, putting him at the head of the executive branch of the government, whose responsibility is to "take care that the laws be faithfully executed"."

They do have George Bush as the 5th result but no reference to him being the current president.

      Google 1st Result:
"President George W. BushPresident Bush on Wednesday said, "The ties between the people of the United States and the people of Latin America are important to our country. ..."

      AskWiki 1st Result:
"The current president is George W. Bush, inaugurated on January 20, 2001 to a first term and on January 20, 2005 to a second. His term expires at noon on January 20, 2009, after which he will be replaced by the winner of the 2008 presidential election."

Zigmas, how does it compare to the AskMeNow beta Wikipedia NLP engine AskWiki?

If you want an easy way to do Powerset and Google searches side-by-side, I put up a super-simple frame page at:

I wonder if WikiAnswers will be added to the database.
